Welcome to The British International School Maths Department!
We take great pride in our commitment to providing an outstanding mathematics education for your children. Our dedicated team of educators is excited and ready to inspire a love for math, nurture critical thinking skills, and foster a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
Mathematics serves various essential aims and plays a fundamental role in our lives, society, and the world at large.
Year 10 is the beginning of the two-year International GCSE. Student will follow the Pearson Edexcel Mathematics A currciulum. This is a two-tier course whereby students will sit two external examinations in Year 11 at either Higher or Foundation level. Students in class sets 1-7 will student the Higher tier, whilst students in set 8 will study the Foundation tier.
- Quantification: Mathematics allows us to quantify and measure various aspects of our world. It enables precise measurement of quantities such as length, time, mass, and volume, which is crucial in fields like physics, engineering, and economics.
- Problem Solving: Mathematics equips individuals with critical thinking skills to analyze complex situations, break them down into manageable components, and develop solutions.
- Modeling and Prediction: Mathematics is used to create models and simulations that represent real-world systems. These models help scientists, engineers, and decision-makers make predictions, test hypotheses, and make informed choices.
Our current learning
This term, we will consider the fundamentals in different areas of mathematics, such as Number, Algebra, Geometry and Statistics. Students will build on the concepts learnt in Year 9, whilst exploring more advanced mathematical concepts across these four areas that will prepare them for the rigor of mathematics that they will meet in the end Key Stage 4 examinations. As you continue to learn and explore these topics, do not hesitate to seek clarification and practice problems to solidify your understanding. Mathematics is a subject where practice and persistence lead to mastery, and it can be a rewarding and empowering journey.
Curriculum Overview
Further Maths
In addition to the Edexcel iGCSE, our most able mathematicians will go on to study the addition AQA further mathematics qualification. This is aimed at students enjoy the challenged and rigor of complex problem solving in mathematics, with a view to studying higher level mathematics in the senior school and beyond.
The higher scheme of work will be covered at a much faster pace, with a view to complete by the end of term one. This will prepare students to embark on the further maths course at the beginning of year 11.
New Starters
Support is always available for our new starters. Speak to your class teacher to access class specific materials, such as Class OneNote. Ensure you have your login details for Sparxmaths and Mathswatch.
